New Delhi: In a thrilling T20 match against South Africa at Centurion, Team India secured an 11-run win, taking a decisive 2-1 lead in the four-match series. This match was momentous not only for India’s victory but also for setting two new T20 world records.
India’s Record-Breaking 200-Plus Total Streak
India’s score of 219/6 marked the team’s eighth 200-plus total in T20 matches this year, a feat unmatched by any other team in a calendar year. This achievement surpasses the previous record of seven 200-plus scores, a record India held in 2023 alongside Birmingham Bears (2022) and Japan (2024).
Tilak Varma’s Century Leads India’s Batting Prowess
India’s total was anchored by Tilak Varma’s remarkable century. Varma’s unbeaten 107 off 56 balls, featuring eight fours and seven sixes, showcased his aggressive play. He was well-supported by Abhishek Sharma, who contributed a quick 50 off 25 balls. This century was India’s fifth individual T20 century in 2024, equalling the record for most team centuries in a calendar year, previously achieved by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (2016) and India (2023).
South Africa’s Valiant Chase Falls Short
South Africa put up a fierce fight with standout performances from Heinrich Klaasen, who scored 41 off 22 balls, and Marco Jansen, whose explosive 54 off just 17 deliveries marked the fastest T20 fifty against India. However, their efforts fell short as India’s Arshdeep Singh bowled effectively, taking three wickets for 37 runs, including the crucial wicket of Jansen in the final over.
