Rupinder Pal Singh, a member of the Tokyo Olympics bronze medal-winning Indian hockey team, has announced retirement from the sport on Thursday. The 30-year-old defender took to Twitter to make the announcement of his international retirement with immediate effect “to make way for youngsters”.
“I would like to inform you about my decision to retire from the Indian hockey team. The past couple of months have undoubtedly been the best days of my life. Standing on the podium in Tokyo along with my teammates with whom I shared some of the most incredible experiences of my life was a feeling I will cherish forever”, tweeted Rupinder Pal Singh.
“I believe it is time for me to make way for young and talented players to experience every great joy that I have felt in these last 13 Years of representing India”, he added.
Rupinder Pal Singh was regarded as one of the best drag-flickers in the country. He played a starring role in the Tokyo Olympics and represented the Indian team in 223 matches. He represented India in the 2014 Commonwealth Games at Glasgow, 2014 Asian Games at Incheon, 2016 Olympic Games held at Rio de Janeiro, and at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, held at Gold Coast, Australia.
