Lothal, July 12: The Indian Navy placed the first artefact in the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) in Lothal, Gujarat, officials said on Wednesday.

Officials stated that the Indian Navy donated a Sea Harrier 609 maritime fighter aircraft as the first artefact to the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) in Lothal, Gujarat.

More than 300 of these artefacts will be installed at NMHC to inspire visitors with amazing stories of the growth of the Indian Navy, the officials added.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the planning, development, building and commissioning of a gallery at the National Maritime Heritage Complex in Lothal, Gujarat, was signed on July 2 by the Indian Coast Guard, Indian Navy, and Indian Port Rail and Ropeway Corporation Ltd.

The MoU was signed for the planning, development, construction, and commissioning of a gallery on the theme “Evolution of the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard” at the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC), which is being built in the historic Indus Valley civilization region of Lothal (Gujarat), a press release from the Ministry of Defence stated.

Sarbananda Sonowal, the minister of ports, shipping and waterways, and Bhupendra Patel, the Chief Minister of Gujarat, were present when the MoU was signed.

Under the aegis of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the Indian government is constructing the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) at the ancient Indus Valley civilization region of Lothal (Gujarat). Prime Minister Narendra Modi lad the foundation stone for the NMHC project in March 2019.

The NMHC, which consists of a maritime museum, a lighthouse museum, maritime theme parks, amusement park centres, etc., will showcase the maritime heritage of the nation from ancient to modern times by using the latest technology and an edutainment approach to raise awareness about India’s maritime heritage, it added.

Four theme parks — Memorial theme park, Maritime and Navy theme park, Climate theme park and Adventure and Amusement theme park — fourteen galleries highlighting India’s maritime heritage from the Harappan times to the present, a Coastal States pavilion showcasing the varied maritime heritage of states and UTs, among other innovative and distinctive features, were listed as some of the attractions that will be included in the project.
