New Delhi: The Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for electing the country’s 17th Vice President. If required, voting will be held on September 9 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with the counting of votes to take place the same evening.
Key Dates for the Vice Presidential Poll
The official notification for the election will be issued on August 7. The last date to file nominations is August 21, while scrutiny of nominations will be held on August 22. Candidates can withdraw their nominations by August 25. If needed, the polling and counting will be conducted on September 9 itself.
Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigned Due to Health Reasons
The post of Vice President became vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on July 21 citing health concerns. His resignation was accepted by President Droupadi Murmu on July 22. About ten days later, the Election Commission released the detailed timeline for the upcoming election.
