New Delhi, Feb 3: The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) has revealed that India’s unemployment rate fell to 6.57 percent in January, the lowest since March 2021, as the country steadily recovers with the lifting of restrictions following a drop in Omicron cases .
“While unemployment in urban India stood at 8.16 per cent in January, in rural areas it was the lowest at 5.84 per cent. In December, the unemployment rate stood at 7.91 per cent, with urban at 9.30 per cent and rural at 7.28 per cent,” the CMIE data said.
Telangana had the lowest unemployment rate in January, at 0.7 percent, followed by Gujarat (1.2 percent), Meghalaya (1.5 percent), and Odisha (1.5 percent) (1.8 per cent).
Haryana, on the other hand, had the highest unemployment rate (23.4%), followed by Rajasthan (18.9%).
According to the CMIE, India’s unemployment rate was 53 million in December 2021, with women accounting for the majority of the unemployed.
In his examination of the December data, CMIE MD and CEO Mahesh Vyas found that 35 million people were actively looking for job in December 2021, with 23% or 8 million of them being women.
Another significant difficulty, according to Vyas, is to find jobs for the additional 17 million people who were unemployed but willing to work if opportunities arose.
