Tehran, Sept 24: Over 700 people during more than a week of protests have been arrested by the Iranian police in just one province following the death of a young woman in custody, according to Tasnim news agency’s report on Saturday.
General Azizollah Maleki, police chief of Guilan province, announced “the arrest of 739 rioters including 60 women”, the Iranian media outlet said.
Earlier, President Ebrahim Raisi said that Iran must “deal decisively with those who oppose the country’s security and tranquillity,” Reuters has reported citing Iranian state media.
Security forces and protesters have been fighting violently all around Iran. In response to anti-government rallies, some state-organized demonstrations took place on Friday in several Iranian cities, with some marchers demanding the execution of “rioters.”
Mahsa Amini passed away on September 16, three days after being admitted to the hospital as a result of being detained by the morality police, a division tasked with upholding the Islamic Republic’s stringent clothing code for women. The 22-year-old apparently passed away from a “heart attack,” according to news reports.
Women have taken to the streets to burn their hijabs (headscarves) in response to Mahsa’s passing while in police custody. Some people have also uploaded videos of them cutting their hair to social media.
