Jerusalem: The election of Zohran Mamdani as the next Mayor of New York City has triggered unease and debate across Israel, with many viewing his victory as a setback for traditional pro-Israel sentiment in American politics. Israelis across the political spectrum expressed concern that Mamdani’s openly pro-Palestinian platform could strain relations between Israel and its most important ally, the United States.

Israelis React With Alarm to Mamdani’s Pro-Palestinian Stance

Public reaction in Israel ranged from disbelief to alarm, with some describing the win as “very bad for Jews.” Commentators warned that Mamdani’s election in a city with the world’s second-largest Jewish population signaled a generational and ideological shift among American voters. “Even where Jewish political and cultural influence is strong, an American can now be elected with a clear anti-Israel label,” wrote analyst Shmuel Rosner of the Jewish People Policy Institute.

Mamdani, a Muslim and far-left Democrat, has been vocal about Palestinian rights and critical of Israel’s military actions in Gaza, which he has described as “genocide.” He has vowed to arrest Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if the Israeli leader visits New York and hinted at reviewing ties with Israeli institutions over the ongoing Gaza conflict.

Israeli Officials and Right-Wing Figures Condemn the Win

Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, warned that Mamdani’s leadership could threaten the “sense of security” of New York’s Jewish community. Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli, a Likud Party member, went further—posting anti-Mamdani graphics, including a 9/11 photo captioned “New York already forgot.” Chikli urged American Jews to relocate to Israel, calling Mamdani “a Hamas supporter.”

Despite the backlash, Mamdani has publicly committed to fighting antisemitism and expressed solidarity with New York’s Jewish community. Roughly 30% of Jewish voters supported him, according to an AP Voter Poll, reflecting a complex political realignment among younger, liberal Jewish Americans.

A Broader Political Shift Taking Shape

Analysts suggest Mamdani’s victory underscores the waning monopoly of pro-Israel politics in the United States. “Younger generations, including Jewish Americans, are challenging traditional narratives,” said Mairav Zonszein of the International Crisis Group. Meanwhile, the Trump administration reaffirmed support for Israel, emphasizing that US-Israel relations remain “stronger than ever.”

Palestinian Leaders Welcome Mamdani’s Election

In contrast, Palestinian politicians hailed Mamdani’s win as a sign of growing global awareness of the Palestinian cause. Veteran leader Mustafa Barghouti called the result “inspiring,” saying it showed that the issue of Palestine has become a mainstream moral and political concern worldwide.
