Bengaluru: India is set to achieve another significant milestone in its space exploration journey with the launch of the PSLV-C60 rocket tonight, a few milliseconds past 10pm. The mission, carrying the Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX), will place two 220-kg spacecraft in a 470 km circular orbit.

This technology demonstration mission aims to prove India’s capability to perform complex in-space docking maneuvers. The success of this mission will position India among an elite group of nations capable of mastering this technology, vital for future endeavors such as lunar missions and the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS).

Key Features of the SpaDeX Mission:

•Spacecraft: The mission involves two spacecraft, SDX01 (Chaser) and SDX02 (Target), which will execute a series of maneuvers to reduce their separation from 20 km to just a few meters before attempting docking.

•Technologies: Indigenous technologies like advanced docking mechanisms, rendezvous sensors, and inter-satellite communication systems will be tested.

•Secondary Objectives: Post-docking, the spacecraft will conduct power transfer experiments and operate scientific payloads, including a high-resolution camera on SDX01 and a multi-spectral payload and radiation monitor on SDX02.

The docking process, scheduled approximately 10 days after the launch, requires extremely precise maneuvering due to the small size of the spacecraft.

Additionally, the PSLV Orbital Experimental Module (POEM) will carry 24 experimental payloads, adding to the mission’s significance.
