Mumbai: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday emphasised the need to restore suppressed pluralism and empower diverse traditions and ideas, asserting that creativity, ethics, and cultural heritage must be central in a modern global order. Addressing the Global Media Dialogue at the WAVES Summit, he also called for smoother talent mobility to strengthen creativity in an era dominated by artificial intelligence.
Pluralism, tradition and a new global narrative
Jaishankar noted that colonialism and big power dominance have historically suppressed pluralism. He said a more democratic world order must go beyond political and economic reforms to include the empowerment of diverse voices, traditions, and creative expression. “The world is intrinsically diverse… it’s essential that we give voice to our traditions, heritage, ideas, and creativity,” he told representatives from over 60 countries.
Technology must pair with ethics and heritage
Calling artificial intelligence a transformative force, Jaishankar warned against its irresponsible use and stressed that “technology and tradition must go hand in hand.” He said the modern era must harness AI and digital connectivity to deepen awareness of global heritage, especially among youth, while ensuring ethical standards are upheld.
Mobility and mindset shifts needed for creative growth
The minister advocated for policy reforms to enable smoother international mobility of talent. He highlighted the role of digital platforms in reshaping the global workforce and said, “Smoother mobility can certainly contribute to stronger creativity.” He also underscored the challenge of gaining attention amid information overload, stressing the need to prepare young talent through skills development and innovation.
AI’s promise, perils and future direction
Jaishankar concluded by noting that while AI and tech innovation offer unprecedented potential, they also bring complex challenges related to authenticity, intellectual property, and content ethics. “Every advancement comes with its own issues, and AI will be no different. The responsible use of emerging technologies will be an increasing preoccupation,” he said.
