Jamshedpur akhara head seeks SSP to review curbs on Ramnavami processions

Jamshedpur, March 27: After the district police made announcement about certain restrictions to be followed by the Ramnavami Jhanda processions on March 31, the leader of a prominent Akhara has urged the administration to review the restrictions.

Abhay Singh, head of the Thakur Pyare Singh Akhara of Kashidih, Sakchi while appreciating the district police chief’s move to take punitive measures against unruly bikers who tend to indulge in performing stunts during any religious procession and drunk driving, has termed the ban on using trailers in the Ramnavami Jhanda processions as unfortunate.

“Much earlier, bullock carts were being used during the Ramnavami jhanda processions in the steel city. In course of time, six-wheelers began to be used in the processions for religious tableaus keeping up the tradition. Now in place of trucks, trailers are used for the same. The police and administration should not suffer from the paranoia due to the use of trailers during the traditional Ramnavami jhanda processions, ” said Singh while talking to the media.

Singh who is also a BJP leader said that restriction imposed on the normal use of DJ is also not fair.

“The administration has successfully ensured celebrations of Hindu Nav Varsa in the city peacefully. We expect the administration will also ensure a peaceful celebration of the Ramnavami there with the same spirit. But the restrictions on the use of trailers and normal use of DJ should be reviewed,” said the head of the Thakur Pyare Singh Akhara.

The BJP leader has declared that if the two restrictions are not reverted back, they would be compelled to resort to protest the administration’s move in a constitutional manner.

There are about 150 licensed Akharas which take out Jhanda processions during Ramnavami every year. As it is a communally sensitive city, the administration has to make elaborate police bandobast to ensure a peaceful Ramnavami festival.

Recently, the senior SP, Prabhat Kumar had at meeting of the Peace Committee members declared that those found indulged in unruly activities like carrying out stunt by the bike or found drunk driving the Ramnavami jhanda processions will be taken to task later on. He had also declared about a ban on the use of four-wheelers and trailers beside the normal use of the DJ.
