Jamshedpur, Nov 30 : The health department has issued an alert to meet any eventuality in the wake of reports of a possible third wave of Covid-19 pandemic triggered by Omicron, a new variant of the virus which has been first reported in South Africa.

Following a directive from the state health department, the local health officials reviewed the preparedness for the situation arising out of the new variant.

District surveillance officer Sahir Pal said there was no need for people to panic over the new variant of Sars-Cov-2, as the government machinery was fully prepared to handle the surge in Covid-19 infections.

“All that the people should do is to strictly follow the Covid-19 guidelines, including wearing of masks, maintaining of physical distancing and regular sanitisation. They should not let their guard down under any circumstances,” he said.

Meanwhile, East Singhbhum district administration on Tuesday issued an order for activating all the Covid checkpoints as a precautionary measure.

Magistrates would be deployed at the checkpoints in double shifts, said an administrative official.

Magistrates would be deployed in ckeck-posts at the new Domuhani bridge, Sitaramdera Bus Terminus, Kharkai bridge, Adityapur toll bridge and exit gate of Tatanagar railway station.

Data available from the health department revealed a spurt in Covid positive cases in the last week of November.
