New Delhi, Jan 10: India’s star speed bowler Jasprit Bumrah will not play in the ODI series against Sri Lanka due to fitness issues, according to a BCCI press release.
Bumrah had already been given a recall to India’s ODI team for the three-match series against Sri Lanka by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). In a T20I match against Australia back in September of last year, Bumrah made his last appearance for India. He has now missed a number of significant Indian events, including the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup. There were great expectations that Bumrah will rejoin India’s squad for the match against Sri Lanka, but it appears the bowler would need a little more time to get back to full health.
“Team India pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the upcoming 3-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. Bumrah, who was set to join the team in Guwahati ahead of the ODI series, will need some more time to build bowling resilience. This decision has been taken as a precautionary measure,” the BCCI said in a statement.
“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has not named any replacement for Jasprit Bumrah. India play their first ODI against Sri Lanka on 10th January in Guwahati,” it added.
One of the main factors contributing to India’s failure to advance in the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup was Bumrah’s exclusion from the squads. Some even accused the BCCI of hastily returning Bumrah. It appears that the board is unwilling to take a chance with the star pacer this time.
Bumrah’s name has previously been added to the Indian team’s list for the Sri Lanka series in a BCCI statement.
Due to a back ailment, Bumrah has not played cricket since September 2022 and was disqualified from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The National Cricket Academy has deemed the bowler fit after he underwent rehabilitation (NCA). He’ll soon be a member of the Team India ODI team.
Bumrah’s status for the entire three-match series has not yet been confirmed by the BCCI.
