Lucknow, May 26: The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) president Jayant Chaudhary will be the Samajwadi Party’s third candidate in the Rajya Sabha elections, which are scheduled on June 10.
“He will be the joint candidate for Rajya Sabha from Samajwadi Party and Rashtriya Lok Dal,” the SP said in a tweet on Thursday morning.
There had been speculation that SP chief Akhilesh Yadav’s wife Dimple would file a bid for one of Uttar Pradesh’s 11 vacant Upper House seats in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.
Kapil Sibal, a well-known lawyer and former congressman, filed his RS nomination with the support of SP on Wednesday. Sibal has chosen to run as an independent candidate rather than on behalf of the SP.
On Tuesday, the nomination process for 11 RS seats from Uttar Pradesh began. According to the strength of the state assembly, the ruling BJP can easily send 7 candidates to the RS, while the SP can send three. The SP alliance has 125 members in the UP assembly, whereas the BJP and its allies have 273 members. For the 11th candidates, both of these parties would receive 14 more votes. Based on its 14 more votes, the BJP intends to field an eighth candidate. In order to win the RS polls in UP, 37 voters are needed.
