Ranchi, Dec 16: To develop a concrete plan for the labourers of the state going to other states or countries for employment opportunities, Chief Minister Hemant Soren launched the Safe and Responsible Migration Initiative (SRMI) today.
SRMI is an 18-month project in the state to chart out plans for the migrant workers with the help of various expert groups.
On the occasion, the CM said that the database of all the labourers will help the government to help them at the time of calamity under the policy.
“During the covid phase, the labourers of the weaker section had to go through many problems and the state government has tried to provide all possible help to the migrant workers by setting up a control room,” the CM said.
“E-shram portal has been created under which registration of migrant workers is done so that the state government can provide immediate help at the time of calamity,” the CM further said.
During the occasion, the CM also focused on establishing coordination between the central and state governments in order to protect the migrant workers who work in other countries.
A multi-stakeholder initiative, the labour department’s SRMI will be supported by Omidyar Network that works with business and technology convergence internationally. It will be implemented by a consortium of Policy and Development Advisory Group (PDAC), Partnering Hope into Action (PHIA) Foundation, Centre for Migration and Inclusive Development (CMID) and the Bharti Institute of Public Policy of the Indian School of Business.
During the 18-month period, the consortium will develop evidence-based and data-driven policies for tackling issues faced by migrant labourers. The main aim of the consortium would be to increase social security and welfare coverage for migrant workers and their families through institutional policy and operational framework.
The idea also revolves around creating awareness about safe and responsible migration practises through special campaigns.
Apart from the CM, the inaugural session was attended by labour minister Satyanand Bhokta, chief secretary Sukhdev Singh and special secretary, Niti Aayog, K Rajeshwara Rao.
