Ranchi, April 4: A day after security personnel gunned down five top Maoists carrying rewards on their heads in Chatra, Jharkhand police chief Ajay Kumar Singh reached the district to boost their morale for this landmark achievement.
Those accompanying him included CRPF ADG Vitul Kumar, ADG (operation) Sanjay Anand Rao Latkar, IG (operation) A. V Homkar, DIG Narendra Singh and SP Rakesh Ranjan and others.
As the police chief Singh’s chopper landed in the district, senior officials of the CRPF and the Jharkhand police present in the district rushed to welcome him. He was also given guard of honour.
Security personnel including CoBRA battalion of CRPF and assault groups of the Jharkhand Police engaged in anti-naxal operation in Jharkhand had an encounter with Maoists on Palamu-Chatra border, about 100km from the state capital.
As many as five Maoists, including a top commander were killed in the encounter. Apart from this, a cache of arms and ammunition including two AK 47 assault rifles looted from the Jharkhand police, one INSAS and two regular rifles were also recovered from the spot.
Extremists killed include Special Area Committee (SAC) member Gautam Paswan and Ajit Oraon alias Charlies besides sub zonal commander (SZC) Amar Ganjhu, Nandu and Sanjit Bhuiyan. They were wanted in over 100 cases. SAC members were carrying rewards of Rs 25 lakhs each on their heads. Sub-zonal commanders were carrying cash awards of Rs 5 lakh each on their heads.
