Ranchi: In a major technological step towards conserving forests and managing wildlife, the Jharkhand Forest Department has initiated the use of high-tech drones to monitor illegal activities and track wild elephants in real time. The move is expected to enhance forest surveillance and reduce human-wildlife conflict in the state.

Advanced Drone Features

The newly introduced drones are equipped with a thermal camera, enabling night-time monitoring of elephant movements.

They can capture high-resolution video and images from up to 30 meters above ground, covering an area of up to one kilometre. This range allows forest officials to efficiently monitor vast forest stretches and respond quickly to emerging threats.

Applications in Wildlife and Forest Protection

Elephant Tracking: With drone surveillance, officials can accurately track wild elephants’ locations. This will help prevent their entry into human settlements, thus reducing the risk of conflict between humans and wildlife.

Monitoring Illegal Activities: Drones will help detect illegal logging, poaching, and encroachment within forest areas. With live aerial views, authorities can intervene promptly and initiate appropriate legal action.

This initiative marks a crucial step in modernising forest management in Jharkhand and aligns with broader goals of sustainable conservation and community safety.
