Ranchi, Aug. 25: Governor CP Radhakrishnan today said that Jharkhand holds an important place from the point of view of minerals and it has an important role in the industrial development of the country, but here expected progress has not been made in the standard of living of the people.

Addressing the ‘Second Jharkhand Mining Summit’ organized at Hotel Radisson Blu, he said that industrial development is absolutely necessary for the development of the country, but we have to see that it does not adversely affect the environment. “After the mining is done, action will have to be taken by preparing an action plan for the maintenance of mines in a planned manner and making them environment-friendly. Now such technology has been developed that many countries of the world are cultivating the desert by making it fertilizer, so why can’t we make proper use of the closed unused mines?” he said.

The Governor said that the nature of mining is constantly changing. “In place of the traditional way of mining, now mining has started with leading technology. With the use of automation, robots, data analytics etc. in this pioneering technology, the efficiency of mining, the safety of the people working there and the protection of the environment have started to be done better than before. Along with this, emphasis is also being laid on the management of mining wastes. In fact, industrial development is necessary for the development of the nation and mining is also necessary for industrial development. We can do mining only where minerals are available. If excavation is to be done there, we have to be sensitive and do the excavation using the latest advanced technology and also take care of the environment. We know that India has set a target of zero carbon emissions by the year 2070.”

The Governor said that special attention should be paid to the safety and health of the people working in mining. “It is also necessary to pay attention to the social and economic aspects of the mining sector only then we can achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” he added.
