Daltonganj, Oct 14: Jharkhand Governor cum Chancellor of state universities Ramesh Bais arrived in Daltonganj by road today to shortly grace the second convocation of Nilamber Pitamber University. Over 150 toppers including the best graduates and PhD scholars will be felicitated by the chancellor for their outstanding academic performance.

Sources said unpredictable weather today made the chancellor reach Daltonganj by road. Chancellor Ramesh Bais thus becomes the first-ever Governor to visit Daltonganj by road from Ranchi, a distance of 170 km. This is because neither any Governor nor the Chancellor depending on the nature of the programmes here had ever taken a road journey in the past 20 years to reach Daltonganj.

Earlier, there was a grand gala programme on the campus of degree college Manika under Latehar district a few years ago where the then governor cum chancellor and now India’s President Droupadi Murmu had to arrive. However, she could not make up for it following technical snags reported in the chopper then which was to bring her to Manika. She then had to address the gathering digitally from the Raj Bhavan.

Chancellor given guard of honour at the circuit house Latehar today

Meanwhile, the governor had a brief stopover at the Latehar circuit house en route to Daltonganj. where he was welcomed by Latehar SP Anjani Anjan and DDC Surender Verma. He was given the guard of honour at the circuit house Latehar.

As a principle of maintenance of law and order the local police, under orders from above, have made ‘seated’ around 7 student leaders in various police stations in the district for a smooth passage of the chancellor’s programme today. There was an input of breach of public tranquillity by around 7 student leaders and hence this crackdown of the police said sources.

Around 500 cops and officials, 4 SDPOs, several officers in charge of the various police stations, 20 magistrates in Palamu and other officials have been deployed for this chancellor’s programme today.

A police officer requesting anonymity confirmed that around 7 student leaders have been made to sit in the various police stations for the entire stretch of the period in which the chancellor would be busy in the convocation. These would be free to go home once the chancellor pushes off for Ranchi by road again which is late in the afternoon today.
