Ranchi, July 19: The Jharkhand High Court, while hearing the criminal writ of News 11 Bharat owner Arup Chatterjee on Tuesday, ordered to release him on bail.

The petition filed by Arup Chatterjee’s wife was heard in the court of Judge Justice SK Dwivedi.

During the hearing, the court directed for the release of newsman Arup Chatterjee on a surety of Rs 50,000.

Chatterjee was arrested and sent to jail on Sunday. Dhanbad police took the action after getting a complaint of extortion against him by a coal trader.

Chatterjee was arrested from his residence on Kanke Road at night with the assistance of Ranchi police. He was produced before the Dhanbad magistrate on Sunday, July 17, at around 11 am. The magistrate ordered to send him to jail.

While going to jail, Arup Chatterjee had told the media that he has been framed by the Dhanbad police for exposing the illegal business of coal involving more than Rs 2000 crore. It is said that the complainant is a close relative of a retired DGP of Bihar.
