Dhanbad, Jan 11: Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) Ranchi would be made the Disability Certification Centre for MBBS students selected on handicapped quota by the Jharkhand Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (JCCECB) for medical colleges of the state.
Rattled by the loss of two reserved handicapped MBBS quota seats in two medical colleges in the 2022-23 academic session, the medical education wing of the state health department and JCECEB authorities have come to the conclusion of making a single centre for the certification of disability.
Dr SK Singh, director of medical education of the state health department said that in this regard, a meeting has been held recently with JCECEB chairman Amrendra Pratap Singh to make RIMS Disability Certification Centre of handicapped MBBS quota students to avoid all the confusion and controversy of the certificate being provided by selected students.
“Medical colleges are facing massive problems in deciding the authenticity of the certificate submitted by students selected on handicapped seats. Since RIMS is the premier autonomous institution in the state and has well-advanced facilities, it would be a fitness centre to screen and issue disability certificates,” said Dr Singh, director of medical education.
Sources said the JCECEB chairman would soon write to the health department in this regard to issue a notification for making RIMS Disability Certification Centre. The demand for a common Disability Certification Centre in the state has been raised by all five medical college authorities.
In the present academic session (2022-23), two handicapped MBBS quota seats, one at Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) Dhanbad and another at Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) Hazaribag remained vacant due to improper certificate submitted by the selected candidate.
The same type of case has appeared in RIMS Ranchi. The student of state has been got out after admission. The matter has reached the High court.
For the all-India MBBS seats, National Medical Commission (NMC) has notified 16 medical colleges across the country which are Vardhaman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjang Hospital, All India Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Mumbai, Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research, Kolkata, Madras Medical College Grant Government Medical College, JJ Hospital, Mumbai, Goa Medical College, Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, SMS Medical College, Rajasthan, Government Medical College and Hospital, Chandigarh, Govt Medical College Agartala, Tripura, Institute of Medical Science Banaras UP, Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and hearing Disability, Mumbai, AB Vajpayee Institute of Medical Science, New Delhi, Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi, All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, Karnataka, AIIMS Nagpur as Disability Certification Centre.
However, in Jharkhand, the certification of all 24 districts’ civil surgeons is recognised to submit at the time of admission. Since most civil surgeons’ office (hospital) has no proper equipment to screen the hearing problem of students, their certificate sometimes becomes controversial.
So the medical education wing and JCECEB have resolved to make a single centre in the state for issuing the certificate.
