Ranchi, June 10: A 48-hour strike (Bandh) was demanded by a sizable number of students in Ranchi under the Jharkhand State Students’ Union (JSSU) flag in protest of the state government’s revised recruitment policy.

To uphold law and order and avert any untoward incidents, the authorities have deployed adequate number of the Jharkhand police.

The Jharkhand government recently introduced a recruiting policy of “60:40,” under which 60% of seats are allocated for the reserved category applicants from the State and the remaining 40% are available for everyone.

A “Naya Vidhan Sabha Adhikaar March” was organised by hundreds of students earlier in March to protest the State Legislative Assembly’s grounds, where the final day of the budget session’s procedures were being held.

By barricading the area and using excessive force, police were able to disperse the protesters over a km before the Legislative Assembly. However, in order to go to the Legislative Assembly, the students detoured and proceeded across fields.

In an effort to disperse the protesters, Jharkhand police used lathi charges and tear gas.

According to Rahul Sinha, the district collector, “The protests got violent thus we deployed forces of over five hundred police officials. We are staying vigilant to avoid any worsening of the law and order situation. We had to use tear gas as well as we are ensuring that the students disperse from here.”
