Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly erupted in uproar as it passed a resolution seeking to restore Article 370, the former special status provision for the region. Following the resolution’s passing, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators raised slogans such as “Jai Shri Ram,” “August 5 Zindabad,” “Anti-National Agenda Nahi Chalega,” and “Pakistani Agenda Nahi Chalega,” leading to repeated adjournments of the House.

The resolution was introduced by Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, who emphasized its intent to re-establish constitutional guarantees that preserved the identity, culture, and rights of Jammu and Kashmir’s people. “This Assembly calls upon the Government of India to restore the constitutional provisions that protected J&K’s special status,” the resolution stated.

BJP members fiercely opposed the move, with BJP MLA Sham Lal Sharma alleging collusion between the Speaker and the National Conference in drafting the resolution. Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma accused the Speaker of partisanship, claiming the mandate supported the abrogation of Article 370 given the BJP’s 26% vote share in comparison to NC’s 23%.

The resolution passed through a voice vote, underscoring its significance for the National Conference-led government. “The people’s aspirations must align with national unity,” the resolution added, advocating for a constructive dialogue with the Centre.
