Ranchi: At the Justice SB Sinha Memorial Lecture hosted by the National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL), Ranchi, Hon’ble Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai of the Supreme Court underscored the enduring significance of the landmark “Kesavananda Bharati vs. State of Kerala” case. Justice Gavai emphasized the crucial role this case played in safeguarding the basic structure of the Indian Constitution and the protection of fundamental rights.
During the event, which honored the judicial contributions of Justice SB Sinha, Justice Gavai highlighted the importance of maintaining the Constitution’s core principles, stressing that any attempt to alter its basic structure would be impermissible. He also discussed other significant judicial decisions, such as the Indira Gandhi and Menaka Gandhi cases, which have further reinforced the importance of fundamental rights in Indian jurisprudence.
Justice Gavai also paid tribute to Justice Sinha’s extensive contributions to the legal field, noting his role in developing key legal principles and his lasting influence on law journals from 2000 to 2009. He praised Justice Sinha’s dedication, work ethic, and his mentorship of junior judges, describing him as a role model who exemplified the pursuit of continuous learning.
The lecture, which began with a tribute by Justice Rongon Mukhopadhyay of the Jharkhand High Court and welcoming remarks by NUSRL Vice Chancellor Dr. Ashok R. Patil, provided an opportunity for legal professionals and students to reflect on the rich tradition and significance of the Indian judicial system. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Assistant Registrar Dr. Jesu Ketan Patnaik, marking a significant occasion to honor Justice SB Sinha’s legacy and inspire future generations.
