New Delhi, June 29: Following a request from the central government, senior attorney K K Venugopal has agreed to stay on as the Attorney General for India for three more months, according to official sources on Wednesday.
Notably on June 30, his current term was set to expire.
The sources claimed that Venugopal was unwilling to remain in the constitutional position for ‘personal reasons.’ But in response to a request from the central government, he has agreed to remain the top lawyer for the Union of India for an additional three months.
In July 2017, the President of India appointed Venugopal to the position of Attorney General of India. He was subsequently reappointed to the post.
An outstanding Supreme Court lawyer, Venugopal has testified in numerous matters involving crucial Constitutional and corporate law concerns. Between 1979 and 1980, he served as an additional solicitor general for India. In 2002 and 2015, he received the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan awards.
