New Delhi: In a significant political move, Kailash Gahlot, Delhi’s former Transport Minister and senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday, marking what Union Minister ML Khattar termed as a “turning point” ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
Gahlot Denies Allegations of Pressure
Speaking at a press conference, Gahlot dismissed allegations that his decision was influenced by pressure from federal investigative agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
“This is not an overnight decision. I have been a part of AAP since its inception and have always worked for Delhi. My decision to leave is not due to any external pressure but because AAP has compromised its values,” Gahlot said.
He attributed his resignation to the “dwindling credibility” of AAP and accused the party of prioritizing political ambitions over public welfare.
Criticism of AAP’s Leadership
Gahlot took aim at the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal, alleging that the party had deviated from its original anti-corruption agenda and had become self-serving. “AAP, which once stood for the common man, has now lost its way. The focus has shifted to political aspirations, and the commitment to the people has eroded,” he added.
The BJP has consistently denied allegations from opposition parties, including AAP, that federal agencies are being used to target political opponents.
Muted Response from AAP
The Aam Aadmi Party has largely refrained from addressing Gahlot’s departure directly. At an event on Sunday, Kejriwal avoided questions on the matter, passing the responsibility to senior leader Durgesh Pathak.
AAP leaders, however, have hinted that Gahlot succumbed to pressure from investigative agencies. “The raids and questioning over several months were too much for him,” a senior party member remarked.
A Rift Long in the Making
Gahlot’s exit comes after months of visible tension with AAP leadership. A key trigger was his removal as Law Minister in December last year during a cabinet reshuffle following Manish Sisodia’s resignation.
The rift widened further during the Independence Day celebrations, where Gahlot was appointed to unfurl the national flag by Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, bypassing Kejriwal’s choice, Atishi.
Gahlot’s Political Journey
A lawyer by profession, Kailash Gahlot represents the Najafgarh Assembly seat, which he has held since 2015. Once considered one of Kejriwal’s closest confidants, his departure underscores growing challenges within the AAP.
