Chicago: U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has officially accepted the Democratic Party’s nomination for the 2024 presidential race, positioning herself to challenge Republican rival Donald Trump. Harris, of Indian origin, steps into the presidential race following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race last month. If elected, she would make history as the first woman to become President of the United States.
Addressing a jubilant crowd at Chicago’s United Center during the Democratic National Convention, Harris, 59, vowed to be a leader who unites all Americans, regardless of their backgrounds. “On behalf of every American, regardless of party, race, gender, or the language your grandmother speaks… I accept your nomination for President of the United States of America,” she declared, drawing loud cheers from the attendees.
In her speech, Harris emphasized the significance of the upcoming election, calling it a unique opportunity for the nation to move beyond past divisions. “With this election, our nation has a precious and fleeting opportunity to move past the bitterness, cynicism, and divisive battles of the past. A chance to chart a New Way Forward, not as members of any one party or faction but as Americans,” she said.
A Sharp Critique of Donald Trump
Harris also took aim at her opponent, Donald Trump, accusing him of planning to “pull our country back” and warned of the consequences of his potential return to the White House. “This election is one of the most important in the life of our nation. Just imagine Donald Trump with no guardrails. How he would use the immense powers of the presidency… not to improve your life, but to serve the only client he has ever had… himself,” she asserted.
Harris reminded the nation of the “chaos and calamity” during Trump’s time in office and criticized his actions following the 2020 election loss, where he questioned the results and incited violence at the U.S. Capitol. “Donald Trump tried to throw away your votes. When he failed, he sent an armed mob to the United States Capitol where they assaulted law enforcement officers,” she stated.
Gratitude to Joe Biden
Harris also expressed her gratitude to President Joe Biden, praising his leadership and character. “Joe, I am filled with gratitude. Your record is extraordinary as history will show. Your character is inspiring,” she said. Biden, who gave an emotional farewell speech earlier in the convention, expressed confidence in Harris, stating, “She will be an outstanding president because she is fighting for our future.”
Honoring Her Family Legacy
In a heartfelt moment, Harris remembered her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, who immigrated from India to California at the age of 19 with a dream of becoming a scientist. Harris reflected on her upbringing in a working-class neighborhood and the lessons of courage and fearlessness instilled by her parents. She recalled her Jamaican father, Donald Jasper Harris, who always encouraged her to be fearless.
As Harris embarks on her historic presidential campaign, she faces a critical battle against Donald Trump, framing the election as a pivotal moment for the future of the United States.
