Chicago: In an unexpected move on the first day of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris expressed her deep gratitude to President Joe Biden for his “lifetime of service” to the nation. The Indian-origin leader, who is also the Democratic nominee for Vice President, lauded Biden’s historic leadership and reaffirmed the country’s appreciation for the 81-year-old president.
“I want to kick us off by celebrating our incredible president, Joe Biden. Joe, thank you for your historic leadership, for your lifetime of service to our nation. We are forever grateful to you,” Harris declared to resounding applause from the crowd, breaking the convention’s tradition where presidential nominees typically speak on the final day.
Harris, 59, is set to officially accept her nomination for the upcoming U.S. elections in November during the convention. Her early speech was met with enthusiastic cheers, underscoring the excitement and momentum within the party.
“People from every corner of our country and every walk of life are here, and this November we will come together and declare with one voice that we are moving forward. Let us always remember—when we fight, we win,” she asserted, rallying the convention attendees.
The four-day event, which concludes on August 22, will see Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, officially nominated as the Democratic candidates for U.S. President and Vice President.
President Biden is expected to deliver a poignant ‘swan song’ address later in the convention, where he will formally endorse Harris and Walz as the party’s ticket against former President Donald Trump. The convention will also feature speeches from former U.S. Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, with a special tribute to Hillary Clinton, the 2016 Democratic candidate who lost to Trump in the Presidential elections.
