New Delhi, March 3: Madal Virupakshappa, a Karnataka BJP MLA, resigned from his position as chairman of Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Ltd, the company that makes Mysore Sandal Soap in response to pressure from the Lokayukta’s anti-corruption division.

With the discovery that his son had accepted a Rs. 40 lakh bribe and the recovery of Rs. 6 crore in cash from his residence by Lokayukta officials, Madal Virupakshappa has come under scrutiny.

The chairman of the state-owned Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Ltd is Virupakshappa, a member of the legislature from Channagiri in the Davanagere district. Prashanth Madal, his son, is the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board’s head accountant (BWSSB).

Prashanth Madal was caught on camera on Thursday accepting a Rs 40 lakh bribe at the KSDL headquarters. He was taken into custody. Following that, Virupakshappa’s home and workplace were searched by the Karnataka government’s anti-corruption watchdog.

The home of the BJP MLA was where the Lokayukta discovered a sizable sum of money. A total of Rs 1.7 crore and Rs 6 crore were taken from the KSDL office and Virupakshappa’s home, respectively. The Legislator will probably be called in for questioning by the anti-corruption watchdog as well.

In his letter of resignation, Madal Virupakshappa denied the allegations against him. “I have no link to the Lokayukta raid. This is a conspiracy against me and my family.”
