Bengaluru, March 17: Muslim religious groups on Thrusady have called for a bandh to protest the Karnataka High Court’s decision upholding the ban on hijab in educational institutions. The opposition Congress, on the other hand, has chosen to remain neutral.

Regarding the position of Congress Muslim leaders on the hijab issue, a Congress representative said, “We had a meeting with religious leaders and have decided to support the legal battle on the matter.”

Earlier, the Supreme Court stated on Wednesday that the petitions challenging the Karnataka High Court’s order on hijab matter will be heard after the Holi vacations.

Notably, the Karnataka High Court ruled on Tuesday that wearing a hijab (a headscarf worn by Muslim women) is not an essential practice in Islam, dismissing several petitions contesting a ban on hijabs at educational institutions. The decision puts an end to a months-long debate in Karnataka, where students staged protests because they were not allowed to wear hijabs in educational institutions.
