Karnataka, Dec 20: A class 4 student in Karnataka’s Hadlin village in the Gadag district died after his teacher thrashed and pushed him off the first-floor balcony of a government-run school.
Police said that the incident took place at a school in Hadli village in Naragund taluk on Monday. The 10-year-old student, Bharath Barker, was thrashed with a shovel and then pushed off the balcony by Muthappa (45), who was a guest teacher in the school.
Muthappa also thrashed Bharath’s mother, Geetha Barker, who is also a teacher in the same school after she and another teacher, Nangangouda Patil, tried to stop him. Geetha Barker is currently undergoing treatment at KIMS Hospital, police added.
Shivprakash Devaraju, a senior police officer of Gadak district said, “The reason is not clear now, prima facie it looks like some family issues among them”.
An FIR has been registered under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code against Muthappa who is now absconding, police said, adding that efforts are on to trace him.
A similar incident was reported at a school in Delhi last week. The teacher, in a fit of rage, had attacked a student of Class 5 with scissors and flung her from the first floor of the school building.
