New Delhi, April1: The Delhi High Court on Friday demanded a status report from the Delhi Police in relation to the violent protest and vandalism outside the Delhi Chief Minister’s residence, as well as the preservation of the incident’s CCTV footage.
On Friday, a bench of Acting Chief Justice Delhi Vipin Sanghi and Justice Navin Chawla requested a status report in sealed form to be filed in two weeks, as well as a recorded declaration from Delhi Police stating that all evidence relevant to the case, including CCTV footage, will be preserved. The court has scheduled a detailed hearing for April 25, 2022.
Sanjay Jain, appearing for the Ministry of Home Affairs, argued against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Saurabh Bhardwaj’s claim that the alleged attack was carried out with the tacit approval of Delhi Police. The petition is misconceived, according to the ASG, and it will be challenged on legal grounds. He further stated that a meeting between the Home Ministry and the Delhi Police had taken place in this regard.
On that Bench said, “Any citizen and political or not could have filed this. This is a constitutional functionary we are talking about. This is the matter related to a Chief Minister.”
Senior Advocate Rahul Mehra, who represented the AAP leader, also voiced concerns about the current state of the Delhi Police inquiry. He claims that the eight people detained so far are being used as scapegoats. At the site, a sitting legislator and other prominent BJP leaders were there. These images and films have already been published in the media and are in the public domain, but nothing has been done about them.
Earlier, AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj filed a complaint with the Delhi High Court on Thursday, alleging an attack and vandalism at the Delhi Chief Minister’s official house on March 30.
The petition requested that a Special Inquiry Team be formed to conduct an unbiased, fair, and time-bound criminal investigation into the incident and its perpetrators.
The petitioner also claimed that the attack was carried out by Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) workers with the tacit approval of the Delhi Police.
Notably, protestors casually walked through the police security cordon outside Kejriwal’s home on Wednesday, kicking and breaking boom barriers, breaking CCTV cameras with lathis, throwing paint at the gate, and attempting to climb over the entrance gate, while Delhi Police personnel simply looked on, doing nothing to stop the protestors, according to the plea.
