Dhanbad, June 28: A large number of students hit the streets today against Binod Bihari Mahto Koylanchal University (BBMKU) Vice-Chancellor (VC) Dr Sukhdeo Bhoi for lodging an FIR against NSUI leaders, including district president Gopal Krishna on ‘false’ charges.
The irate NSUI-affiliated student members burnt an effigy of the VC at Randhir Verma Chowk and threatened to intensify the agitation if the BBMKU authorities failed to address the problems of students timely and concede the demands.
The students have been on the boil since June 21 after the university authorities filed an FIR against NSUI district president Gopal Krishna and four other unidentified students for creating an obstruction in the office function of the university and study of PG classes.
The NSUI activists sat at the gate of the university for several hours on June 21 when they were denied entry by security guards to meet the vice-chancellor and other authorities over the closure of PG studies in colleges of Dhanbad and Bokaro.
“ Charges of the university that the NSUI agitation obstructed PG classes is false as in the wake of International Yoga Day on June 21, authorities had suspended PG and UG classes on that day. So, the case has been lodged on false charges,” said Gopal Krishna.
The NSUI district president charged that the VC has got the FIR lodged against them to cover his corruption and failure in running the university smoothly. Implementation of the New Education Policy (NEP) has nosedived in BBMKU as 70% of students failed in the first semester. Moreover, higher education has been completely paralyzed as the VC closed PG studies in the colleges of Dhanbad and Bokaro. Poor students of Bokaro and remote areas of Dhanbad aspiring for higher education face an uphill task to go to the university campus for the same, he added.
The NSUI has also alleged that the VC furnished his official residence with Rs 14 lakh without issuing a proper tender.
“The NSUI has kick-started the agitation against misdeeds of the vice-chancellor from Tuesday and would continue it till the demands of students ( improvement in the implementation of NEP) are accepted,” said Gopal Krishna.
