Lakhimpur, Jan 3: The Uttar Pradesh Special Investigation Team (SIT) filed a 5000-page chargesheet in the Lakhimpur Kheri case on Monday, marking a significant breakthrough.
The opposition, which has been campaigning for the removal of Union Minister of State Ajay Mishra, has gained a major boost after the latter’s son Ashish Mishra was named as the principal accused in this case. Virendra Shukla, Ajay Mishra’s relative and the Palia block leader, has also been named as an accuser.
Ashish Mishra was charged with a conspiracy to destroy evidence under Section 201 of the Indian Penal Code. According to sources, the SIT also presented the court with a pen drive and a DVD. This comes just days before the 90-day time for filing a chargesheet was set to expire on Tuesday. The SIT team concluded that the Lakhimpur violence was a planned conspiracy.
Notably, on 3 October, Violence broke out in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district leading to the death of 8 persons including 4 farmers. On 17 November, the Supreme Court-appointed retired Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Rakesh Kumar Jain to monitor the investigation into the Lakhimpur violence.
