New Delhi: The Punjab Police has suspended seven officers, including two Deputy Superintendents of Police, for their roles in the controversial 2022 interview of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, conducted while he was in custody. The suspended officers include DSPs Gursher Singh and Sammer Vaneet, among others.

The suspensions were announced following findings from a Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up on the directive of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The SIT determined that the interview took place through video conference while Lawrence Bishnoi was in the custody of the Kharar CIA in September 2022. The suspension orders were issued by the state home secretary, Gurkirat Kirpal Singh, on Friday.

Suspended Officers and Investigation Findings

Other suspended officers include sub-inspectors Reena (CIA, Kharar), LR Jagatpal Jangu (AGTF), Shaganjit Singh (then duty officer), and head constable Om Parkash. The SIT’s investigation revealed that initial claims suggested the interview took place in Jaipur Central Jail, but later evidence established that it actually occurred in a Punjab jail.

Lawrence Bishnoi Granted Relief

In a separate development, Lawrence Bishnoi received relief on Friday in a 13-year-old case related to an assault involving a Mohali student.
