United Nations: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared at the United Nations on Friday that military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon will persist until Israel’s objectives are fully achieved. This statement comes amid ongoing hostilities and despite recent proposals for a 21-day truce by France and the United States.
Addressing the UN General Assembly, Netanyahu made it clear that Israel has no choice but to continue its military actions as long as Hezbollah maintains its aggressive stance. “As long as Hezbollah chooses the path of war, Israel has no choice, and Israel has every right to remove this threat and return our citizens to their home safe,” Netanyahu said, underscoring his country’s determination to neutralize the threat posed by the militant group.
Rejection of Proposed Truce
Netanyahu’s remarks dampen hopes for a ceasefire, which had been proposed earlier this week by France and the US as a potential solution to de-escalate tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. However, Netanyahu’s firm stance indicates that Israel is not ready to halt its operations until its strategic goals are met.
The Israeli leader did not specify the exact objectives Israel seeks to achieve before ending its military campaign but emphasized the importance of safeguarding Israeli citizens from Hezbollah’s threats.
Escalating Conflict with Hezbollah
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has been intensifying, with Hezbollah reportedly embedding weapons in civilian areas of southern Lebanon, prompting Israeli strikes. Netanyahu has previously justified the operations as necessary to ensure the safety and security of Israel’s population.
The ongoing military campaign has resulted in significant destruction in parts of Lebanon, with both sides suffering casualties. Netanyahu’s speech at the UN suggests that the conflict is far from over, and Israeli forces will continue their operations until Hezbollah’s military capabilities are dismantled.
