Hazaribagh: A convict serving a life sentence at the Jayaprakash Narayan Central Jail in Hazaribagh died by suicide on Monday, just hours after meeting with his family members. The deceased has been identified as Bhairavnath Daraondhi, a resident of Barwaddah in Dhanbad district, who was serving time since 2017 in a murder case.

Discovered missing during prisoner count

Jail authorities discovered Bhairavnath was missing during a routine headcount. A search operation inside the prison premises was immediately launched, and his body was found hanging with a gamchha (traditional cloth towel). The incident reportedly occurred shortly after his family visited him in jail.

Taken to hospital, declared dead

He was rushed to Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The jail superintendent informed the family, and the body has been sent for postmortem.

Police investigation underway

Local police have begun an investigation to determine the reasons behind the suicide. Authorities are also reviewing whether any negligence or circumstances inside the jail may have contributed to the incident.
