New Delhi: The Lok Sabha was adjourned till Monday following relentless uproar by opposition MPs during the Budget Session on Friday. The protest erupted during Question Hour, with opposition members storming into the Well of the House, raising slogans and demanding accountability over national security concerns.
Speaker Om Birla Loses Patience
Speaker Om Birla, visibly upset with the repeated disruptions, declared, “I can’t run the House like this.” He noted that over 19 hours and 13 minutes of House proceedings have already been wasted since Monday due to the deadlock. The initial session was suspended till noon, and after the commotion persisted, the entire day’s proceedings were adjourned till 9 February.
Backdrop: Rahul Gandhi’s China Remarks
The disruptions trace back to Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s reference to an unreleased book by former Army Chief Gen. M.M. Naravane during his address on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s speech. He raised concerns over China’s border aggression and alleged mishandling by the Prime Minister. His remarks have since triggered political friction, leading to sustained protests from the opposition and counterattacks from the treasury benches.
Taxpayers Bear the Cost of Parliamentary Paralysis
The continued logjam is drawing criticism for wasting public resources and delaying legislative business. With both sides unrelenting, the Budget Session remains in a deadlock.
