Jamshedpur, July 12: No letting-up in elephant menace in Kolhan region as a 55-year-old man was trampled to death by a wild tusker at Rajnagar block in the adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district early on Wednesday morning.
The tusker which is apparently strayed away from a herd has also inflicted grievous injuries to a 18-year-old youth a little distance away from the spot where he killed the villager.
Whereas the trampling death has taken place at Bodsmtaliya village around 5.30 am, the second incident took place at Khiri-Bhalubasa village two hours later, triggering fear among the villagers as the belligerent tusker is still moving in the human habitat menacingly.
The man who was killed has been identified as Judhistir Mahto, a resident of Bodsmtaliya village. He fell victim to the elephant’s wrath while he was going to meet nature’s call inside a bush near his house early in the morning.
The villagers were panicked as they came to know about the incident and all had become alert. But the lone tusker which was moving around desperately continued to remain in aggressive mode, leading the people to inform the forest department.
As the villagers were waiting eagerly for the forest department officials in anticipation of redressal from the dangerous situation, the tusker attacked the youth identified as Sumit Panda and inflicted grievous injuries.
The injured who is a resident of Khiri-Bhalubasa village was rushed to a nursing home in Adityapur for treatment.
It may be mentioned here that trampling deaths were reported from Chandil-Chowka areas in the Seraikela-Kharsawan district and also in the Chakulia block in the Ghatsila sub-division of the East Singhbhum district earlier.
