Chennai, August 25: The Madras High Court rejected arguments on Friday made by the former Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and suspended AIADMK politician O Panneerselvam (OPS) seeking stay on his expulsion from the party.

The Madras High Court’s Justices R Mahadevan and Mohammed Shaffiq rejected the arguments made in opposition to a single judge’s decision not to interfere with the AIADMK general council resolution expelling OPS from the party on July 11, 2022.

“Today the division bench rendered a judgement stating that AIADMK general council’s resolutions are valid. So hereafter AIADMK will be headed only by Edappadiyar. He will be the leader of AIADMK. That is approved by the High Court order,” stated Advocate Inbadurai, speaking on behalf of AIADMK general secretary Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS), in response to the decision made by the High Court’s division bench.

“We only argued that AIADMK’s general council is the superior authority. And this superior authority has decided Edappadiyar to be the leader and it was now accepted by the High Court,” he added.

The AIADMK’s dual leadership model was abolished and OPS was expelled from the party for engaging in “anti-party” behavior during a party meeting, at the General Council meeting held on July 11.

Edapaddi Palaniswami (EPS) was elevated during the conference to serve as the party’s acting General Secretary.

Later, EPS received approval from the Indian Election Commission to serve as the AIADMK’s General Secretary.

Following O Panneerselvam’s removal from the AIADMK in March and the Madras High Court’s refusal to intervene in his expulsion from the party, the election body made its judgement.
