Kolhapur, June, 7: Protests have broken out in Kolhapur, Maharashtra in response to a social media post that some claim glorifies Mughal emperor Aurangzeb while demeaning a national symbol of the Maratha people. Members of various right-wing organisations in the city demanded a Kolhapur bandh on Wednesday, which swiftly turned into violent protests.

Around ten in the morning, protesters gathered at the Shivaji Maharaj Chowk and began yelling chants demanding punishment for the two accused who had posted objectionable content.

“We will not tolerate the glorification of Mughal leaders on our Maratha land. We are ready to pick up swords for the protection of Hindu society. This will not be tolerated,” stated an aggressive protester.

A few of the demonstrators allegedly vandalised property as they spread out across the neighbourhood. According to sources, a few vehicles were also damaged. In order to contain the demonstrators, police officials increased security in the impacted areas of the city.

Lathi charges were used by the neighbourhood police. On the protesters, sources claimed they also used tear gas. Stone throwing took place near the Town Hall earlier in the day.

In addition, several demonstrators asserted that Hindus in India are not secure, citing “Love Jihad” and the recently released controversial film “The Kerala Story.” They were observed carrying flyers that expressed worry for the safety of Hindus in India.

Later that day, Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde remarked in a statement to the media, “It’s the government’s responsibility to maintain law and order in the state. I also appeal to the public to maintain peace and calm. Police investigation is underway and action will be taken against those found guilty.”

Maharastra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis said, “Maharashtra me achanak kuch jilo me Aurangzeb ki auladien paida hui hain (In some districts of Maharashtra, some children of Aurangzeb have suddenly appeared). They are posting pictures and status on social media of Aurangzeb, which is causing ill-will in society,”
