Colombo, July 15: The Supreme Court on Friday issued an order prohibiting Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s two brothers, former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and former finance minister Basil Rajapaksa, from leaving the country after his resignation as president of Sri Lanka was publicly announced.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa has already travelled this week, first to Singapore and then to the Maldives.

Just two months prior, Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned as prime minister when some protesters outside his brother Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s office were attacked by his supporters. After that, the demonstrations got worse, forcing Gotabaya Rajapaksa to leave the country and step down.

His resignation followed months of unrest over the island nation’s poor economic management, which caused terrible suffering for its 2.2 crore inhabitants.

Meanwhile, the acting president, Ranil Wickremesinghe, has been sworn in today. On Wednesday, July 20, Parliament will choose a new President, an official announced.

Additionally, protesters returned the Presidential Palace to the government today after capturing it last Saturday. As soon as they arrived, a forensic team began taking fingerprints and evaluating the extent of the damage.
