With 7987 votes, Kharge was easily elected, while Tharoor received 1072 votes in his favour. On October 17, more than 9,000 Congress delegates from all around India cast ballots to elect their party’s leader.
A momentous day for the Congress party was marked by Kharge’s election as the next party leader since, after nearly 24 years, he will be the first non-Gandhi party leader.
“We have to fight the fascist forces. We have to fight the forces that pretend to be democratic but attack democracy,” Kharge said in the first address after his victory.
