Kolkata: Bristi Mukherjee, niece of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was found dead by suicide, with her body discovered hanging inside a room at her home in Kusumba village, Rampurhat, Birbhum district. Bristi was 28 years old. Police have sent the body for post-mortem examination, and no suicide note has been recovered from the scene.
Bristi Was Daughter of Former TMC Block President
Bristi was the daughter of Nihar Mukherjee, Mamata Banerjee’s cousin, who had previously served as a Trinamool Congress block president in Rampurhat. She had faced allegations of securing a job through irregularities in the primary teacher recruitment process, and her job had subsequently been terminated during the investigation into the matter.
Family Says Job Loss Followed Supreme Court’s Recruitment Cancellation Order
Family members said Bristi had lost her job in March 2023 following a Supreme Court order cancelling appointments in government-aided schools due to alleged corruption in the recruitment process. During the investigation into the recruitment scam, central agencies found irregularities in nearly 90 percent of OMR sheets, with Bristi’s name, along with several other candidates who had allegedly benefited from the malpractice, surfacing during the probe. This led to legal action and the eventual loss of her job. Bristi was also reportedly going through divorce proceedings with her husband at the time of her death.
