Agartala, May 15: Manik Saha takes oath as the new Tripura Chief Minister on Sunday, ahead of the state assembly poll scheduled for early next year. After Biplab Kumar Deb resigned on Saturday, Saha was chosen as the next chief minister. Deb is now expected to become the BJP’s Tripura chief.

Manik Saha rushed to Twitter after being elected CM to announce that he had visited with the state governor and presented him with a letter of support from MLAs.

“Being elected as [BJP’s] Legislative Party Leader, met the Hon’ble Governor at Raj Bhavan and submitted the claim to form the government with the letter of support from my party legislatures (sic).”

According to reports, Deb recommended Manik Saha as the next chief minister. Saha is not the first ‘Manik’ to serve as Tripura’s chief minister. Manik Sarkar of the CPI(M) was the previous chief minister, serving for 20 years till 2018.

Notably, Saha was a member of the opposition Congress until joining the BJP in 2016, and after Deb resigned, he was selected as the BJP’s Tripura unit president in 2020.
