Imphal: The Manipur government on Tuesday imposed a five-day ban on internet services across the state to control the deteriorating law and order situation. The decision comes amid growing concerns that anti-social elements might misuse social media platforms to spread hate speech, misinformation, and inflammatory content, potentially provoking further violence in the already troubled region.
“Temporary suspension/curbing of internet and mobile data services, including Lease Lines, VSATs, broadband, and VPN services, has been ordered across Manipur for five days, effective from 3 PM on September 10 until 3 PM on September 15,” the government said in a statement.
Manipur has been gripped by ethnic violence between the predominantly Hindu Meitei majority and the mainly Christian Kuki community for over a year. The long-standing tensions have frequently flared into violent clashes, dividing the state into ethnic enclaves. Last week, at least 11 people were killed as hostilities resurfaced after months of relative calm, with rival militias setting up blockades in various parts of the state.
Curfew Imposed in Imphal
In addition to the internet suspension, the state capital Imphal and its surrounding areas were placed under curfew following student-led protests on Monday, which sparked clashes with police. Protesters are demanding action against insurgents accused of using improvised projectile weapons and drones, which authorities have described as a “significant escalation” in the ongoing conflict.
To prevent further violence, the state government issued a directive, stating that the suspension of internet services is necessary to “thwart the design and activities of anti-national and anti-social elements” and to “maintain peace and communal harmony.”
The government emphasized that the ban aims to curb the spread of disinformation and false rumors on social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, which could lead to the mobilization of mobs, endangering lives and property through arson and vandalism.
Ethnic Tensions
The violence in Manipur has deep-rooted causes, primarily revolving around competition for land and public jobs between the Meitei and Kuki communities. The state has witnessed periodic clashes over these issues, and the latest bout of unrest has only worsened the divide.
As the internet ban continues, the authorities hope to restore order and prevent further escalation of violence in Manipur. The state government remains vigilant, with heavy police and military deployment to enforce the curfew and maintain peace.
