A powerful earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale struck Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula on Tuesday, triggering tsunami warnings in multiple countries across the Pacific. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake’s epicenter was 133 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at a depth of 74 km under the ocean. The tremors were strongly felt and have sparked global concerns.
Tsunami Alerts Issued in Several Countries
In the aftermath of the quake, Russia’s eastern coasts were placed on tsunami alert. Japan’s Meteorological Agency warned of waves up to one meter high, while Hawaii’s Civil Defense Agency cautioned of potentially destructive waves due to the quake’s intensity. High alert status has also been issued in Japan, Hawaii, New Zealand, and Indonesia.
New Zealand, Indonesia Brace for Impact
New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Indonesia’s Geophysics Agency issued warnings about abnormal and dangerous sea waves. Residents have been urged to avoid coastal areas and strictly follow official safety advisories.
Local Emergency Response and Ongoing Evacuations
Tsunami waves have reportedly hit parts of Russia’s Kuril Islands. Sirens have been sounded in several coastal regions to alert citizens. Emergency teams are evacuating people from vulnerable areas to safer zones. Social media is flooded with videos showing swaying buildings and widespread panic among residents.
Governor Confirms Strongest Quake in Decades
Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov described the earthquake as the most powerful tremor the region has experienced in decades. While no major casualties have been reported so far, a kindergarten was partially damaged. Authorities stress the need for continued vigilance and preparedness.
Region Already Rattled by Previous Quakes in July
This isn’t the first major seismic activity in the region this month. In early July, five significant underwater quakes were recorded in the same area. Experts warn that because this latest quake occurred at a shallow depth of just 19.3 km, the impact on the surface is likely to be more severe.
Governments Mobilize Emergency Measures
Japan has formed an emergency committee to respond to the threat. In Russia’s Sakhalin region, authorities have begun relocating residents from vulnerable areas. All citizens have been advised to follow emergency protocols and stay away from the coast until further notice.
