New Delhi, Feb 8: The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought a response of the Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Delhi on a plea by AAP challenging the LG’s move to allow members nominated by him to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to vote in the elections for mayor and deputy mayor.

A bench consisting of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala also requested Satya Sharma, the MCD’s protem officer, to respond.

“Issue notice returnable on Monday (February 13). Serve to also the LG office through a central agency,” the Court directed.

The petition had expressed opposition to holding elections for the positions of mayor, deputy mayor, and standing committee at the same time, the court noted in its order.

Notably, despite voting in members of its municipal corporation by the end of last year, Delhi does not yet have a mayor.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had won 104 of the 250 wards, while the AAP had won 134. December 7, 2022 saw the announcement of the results.

In two previous Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) meetings, fighting between AAP and BJP council members broke out. The saffron party first said that it would be putting out candidates for the two slots due to its lack of a majority, but has subsequently changed its mind.
