New Delhi, July 18: Mohammed Zubair, a co-founder of Alt News, requested on Monday that his Supreme Court petition to have the FIRs against him that had been filed in numerous districts of Uttar Pradesh for allegedly inciting religious sentiments quashed be listed on an urgent basis.
A bench presided over by Chief Justice N V Ramana took note of Mohammed Zubair’s attorney Vrinda Grover’s claims that the journalist and fact-checker had been the target of numerous FIRs and that his case required an urgent hearing.
“List it before Justice DY Chandrachud. You can mention before that bench,” said the bench.
In his most recent argument, Mohammed Zubair also disputed the Uttar Pradesh government’s decision to form the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the six instances. According to the argument, the special cell of the Delhi Police is looking into all six of the FIRs lodged in Uttar Pradesh that has been forwarded to the SIT for examination.
Mohammed Zubair is the subject of separate FIRs in the districts of Sitapur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Ghaziabad, Muzaffarnagar, and Hathras on suspicion of inciting racial tension, insulting news anchors, disrespecting Hindu deities, and posting inflammatory content.
