New Delhi, March 2: The Election Commission announced on Thursday that the NPP, which is now in power in Meghalaya, was ahead in 22 seats and the UDP, in nine, as the counting of votes for the assembly elections got under way. The TMC was in the lead in five seats, followed by the BJP, the VPP, the HSPDP, and the Congress in two and four, respectively.

There were also two independent candidates in the lead. Conrad K. Sangma, the chief minister, had a slim advantage against Bernard N. Marak of the BJP in the South Tura seat, 44 votes to 44.

From the Songsak seat, TMC opposition leader Mukul Sangma was leading the NPP’s ND Shira by 457 votes. Around 8 am, Meghalaya’s vote-counting process started under heavy security. Thirteen locations are counting the votes. Meghalaya has 60 seats, but voting was postponed in the Sohiong seat since a candidate passed away. On February 27, the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly held elections for 59 assembly districts, with a turnout of 85.17 percent.
