Ranchi: The Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee has strongly opposed the Centre’s proposed bill to repeal the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), calling it a deliberate and deeply troubling move against the rights of rural workers.

Removing Gandhi’s Name Called a Conspiracy

State Congress general secretary and media in-charge Rakesh Sinha said MGNREGA is a law that emerged from people’s movements and embodies the values of labour dignity, social justice, and moral responsibility towards the poorest. He alleged that removing Mahatma Gandhi’s name from the Act is nothing less than a conspiracy and reflects the BJP and RSS’s discomfort and distrust of Gandhian values. According to him, the move is an attempt to erase the association of the Father of the Nation with a people-centric welfare law.

Statewide Protests Announced on December 17

Sinha said that following directions from the All India Congress Committee, state Congress president Keshav Mahato Kamlesh has instructed all district presidents to organise protest demonstrations at district headquarters across Jharkhand on December 17. The protests aim to oppose efforts to erase Mahatma Gandhi’s name and values and to explain to the public how the proposed new law could adversely impact workers.

Congress Foundation Day Programs on December 28

He further announced that on December 28, the Congress Foundation Day, programmes will be organised at district, block and village levels across the state, featuring portraits of Mahatma Gandhi. Through these events, the party will reaffirm its commitment to the dignity of labour, social justice, and the right to work.
